Formation: Imagining Israel’s Early Years Through Abstract Narrative

Formation started as a trip to the Jaffa Flea Market. In 2015 I found a duffle bag full of letters, notebooks, photos and other personal effects from the 1930s, forties and fifties. Yielding to curiosity and taking visual cues from the items themselves, I began intuitively incorporating these scraps into my paintings as an exploration of the marks we make and collect throughout our lives. Each work became a curated collection of signatures and stamps, lists and letters, receipts and forms - the paper trail of Israel’s formation. In this way I gently tease out the humanity behind the artifacts in a celebration of the things we create and the things we leave behind.
